While the McDonald family was living in Nebraska during the early 1880's, Fannie May earned her teacher's certificate and taught from 1884-86.
Fannie moved with her family to Santa Fe, Kansas in 1886, where, on October 30, 1887, she married Fletcher Hamshaw.  Earl Cranston Othello Hamshaw, the couple's first child, was born in Santa Fe August 11, 1888.
Fletcher eventually operated placer mines in British Columbia and Alaska.  His children, Earl, Eva, and Gertrude, would sometimes join him for visits in those locations, and, after he married Margaret Frost (born May 20, 1873 in Canada; died January 21, 1950 in Los Angeles, California; Fletcher and Margaret Hamshaw became the parents of Greta Hamshaw born March 18, 1904 in New York; died May 30, 1975 in Inglewood, California) they would visit their father and new stepmother in New York.  The children, who were all very musically inclined, eventually attended and boarded at Oberlin School.  According to their instructors, they couldn't teach Earl anything, but that he could teach them a thing or two.  Eva went on to become a concert pianist.
Above...a loving remembrance written by Fletcher for his beloved wife just after her death.
